A woman’s journey of recovery

Anita Kaiser is a survivor. While a car crash may have left her with a spinal cord injury, Anita has proven time and time again that she is more than her injury.

The crash may have taken her mobility, but it did not take away her passion for life. Following the accident, Anita went on to complete a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Science, become a Research Assistant at the Lyndhurst Centre, published academic papers and is an injury survivor presenter with SMARTRISK Heroes.

But Anita describes her most courageous challenge yet: motherhood.

"Following my injury, the first thing I put into writing were the names of my future children. That was a message to myself that I wasn’t going to let this injury prevent me from pursuing my dreams of having a career, getting married and having children. I also knew I would be a role model for others and help reverse stereotypes about parenting with a disability. I take that role seriously and am now passionate about helping educate other people with SCI who are interested in having children."

Anita’s story exemplifies hard work, resilience, passion, and above all, courage – courage to not only take on the difficult journey of recovery, but courage to better the lives of others by sharing her knowledge and story.
